The thoroughbreds have had their turn and now it's time for Otago's most marketable standardbred yearlings to be primped and preened for the sales ring next week. Matt Smith joined the second day of the Southern Bred Southern Reared yearling bus tour in Otago on Tuesday and picked out a few of the potential leading lights who will go under the hammer at the New Zealand Premier Yearling Sale in Christchurch next week.

Lot 174: Bollinger
Br c Bettor's Delight-Asabella
This colt has the immediate family behind him, but he's got the looks to match, too.

He is a full brother to group 1 winners Ohoka's Bondy and Dancing Diamond, while Code Red was no slug, either.

But when he was paraded by preparer Graeme Mee at Wingatui on Tuesday, he looked like a powerful individual who will be capable of running early - just like his three siblings who have already raced.

Dancing Diamond and an unraced 3yr-old fetched six figures in the sales ring, and it would be no surprise to see this colt get close to that mark.

Lot 467: Spring Campaign
Br c Courage Under Fire-Spring Thaw
Harness racing fans will remember Courage Under Fire's nickname of the Pocket Rocket.

Luckily, his lack of size hasn't always passed on to his progeny, and Spring Campaign, out of the Tuapeka Lodge draft, has avoided this shortcoming.

In fact, judging by his hindquarters, he still has some growing to do in front to fill out his frame completely.

His first dam has already left her mark with six winners including Talaspring (19 wins in NZ and Australia), Kabet and Hez The Artisan.

Lot 187: Arden's Beach Boy
Somebeachsomewhere-Ardensplace
Arden Lodge's John Stiven couldn't have asked for better advertising for his colt last weekend.

Not only did the Tapanui-bred Arden Rooney win the Hunter Cup - joining Arden Meadow (1986 WA Derby) and Bettor's Strike (20099 Victoria Cup) on top of the Arden Lodge honour roll - but Arden's Beach Boy's sire, Somebeachsomewhere, produced Victoria Derby winner Menin Gate.

The second foal of an unraced half-sister to Arden's Darlin was a good mover when parading and is supported by some good performers through his second, third and fourth dam.

Lot 475: Ash
B c The Pres-Tamarix
He's only 25 lots from the end of the sale, but Ash could be worth the wait if you're wanting a trotter.

There's plenty of pacing blood in his pedigree, including former pacer of the year Sapling, but the immediate family has found its success in trotting.

Larix won 10 races, including the 4yr-old trotters championship, while Given collected four wins.

The Pres is a relatively new sire to New Zealand, with his oldest crop only 3yr-olds, but he has already been represented at the top level by Primz Luck in 2yr-old features last year.
