Sevens: No formal talks about hosting event

No formal discussions have taken place about staging an international sevens competition in Dunedin, but if the opportunity arrived the boss of Forsyth Barr Stadium says he will put his hand up.

The Wellington leg of the International Sevens series kicks off in the capital today, but the romance between the event and the city appears to have waned.

About half the tickets to the event have been sold, with the Wellington Rugby Football Union expected to make a large loss on the event.

It has a contract to hold the 16-team tournament again next year, but there are doubts whether the union would want to stage it, as it is set to take a financial bath on this year's event.

That has led to speculation the tournament may move somewhere else, as it has run its course in Wellington.

Dunedin Venues Management Ltd chief executive Terry Davies said no formal discussions over hosting a sevens tournament had ever taken place.

But if there was a chance to host the event at Forsyth Barr Stadium, he said DVML would be at the table.

''We, of course, would be interested in hosting the sevens. The stadium would create a terrific atmosphere,'' he said.

''If the opportunity arose we would be putting our hat into the ring.''

The event in Wellington used to sell out within minutes, but a clampdown on drinking and complaints about excessive rules has led to disappointing ticket sales over the past couple of years.

Last year's event was not helped by rain on the final day.

Otago Rugby Football Union general manager Richard Kinley said the union would not be interested in hosting an event and it was more up to the people in charge of the stadium to pursue the tournament.

Hosting a sevens tournament was outside the union's core role, he said.

Otago used to be the host union for the national sevens tournament, but it was moved to Rotorua a couple of years ago.

If Forsyth Barr Stadium was to host the sevens it may have to relax drinking rules and likely host the event in student orientation time to attract a crowd.
