No need to worry about getting caught short at North Ground sports field now.

A new toilet block will soon be constructed at the field, next to St David St.

The Dunedin City Council will start the work today by shifting two trees to another part of the reserve, to make way for the new facility.

DCC property services project manager Rachel Scott said North Ground was strategically chosen for the new toilets because they would benefit the surrounding mix of residents and commercial dwellings, as well as people at sporting matches on the recreational reserve.

"A large amount of people have wanted more public toilets in north Dunedin for some time," she said.

"The new toilet at North Ground sits nicely next to State Highway1 and will be the last toilet stop before heading north."

An archaeological assessment was undertaken to determine the significance of the land and potential risk of encountering historical artefacts and infrastructure.

The assessment showed a low chance of encountering anything significant.

However, documents show the reserve has been used as a sports ground for more than 160 years.

The Dunedin Caledonian Society took over management of the ground in 1862, and it subsequently built a two-storey grandstand.

The grandstand was used for recreational purposes, sports and civic events, until it was moved to South Dunedin in 1876, Ms Scott said.

"I was surprised to find out about the history of the area and the grandstand that existed.

"It was the largest building in north Dunedin at the time."

Archaeologists will monitor the construction site for any subsurface infrastructure while the redevelopment and construction work is completed.

Earthwork and excavations of the area were expected to begin on Monday, and the facility would take about three months to complete, Ms Scott said.

"The new toilets will be modern and incorporate a new design and improved amenities."
