Assault accusation at Antarctic base

A member of a small South African research team at a remote Antarctic base has been accused of physical assault.

Nine researchers were due to spend months at the South African-run base.

An official from South Africa’s Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, which supervises the base, said it "immediately activated the response plan in order to mediate and restore relations at the base".

It had no plans to bring any of the team back home, CNN reported.

"The alleged perpetrator has willingly participated in further psychological evaluation, has shown remorse and is willingly co-operative to follow any interventions that are recommended."

It was also investigating allegations of sexual harassment, the BBC reported. — Agencies
