Central Otago businesses and residents say sporadic power outages have become the norm after more than 11,000 people were left in the dark on Tuesday night.

The Aurora Energy website said the outage, which affected 11,140 customers, began at about 10.30pm on Tuesday and was not fully resolved until yesterday morning.

Lake Hāwea locals have said that power outages were becoming more common in the neighbourhood, one resident reporting five in the past 77 days.

Receptionist Lynley Malmo, from the Hāwea Hotel, said they were accustomed to getting more outages in the winter but had had one last week and another this week, both of which were "random and not planned".

She said although they were used to it, the outages did create some frustrations with their guests.

"It definitely impacts our guests. We had guests emailing us last night," she said in reference to the Tuesday night power cut, which was less disruptive as it hit during the later hours of the evening.

However, the outage they experienced last week was earlier in the day and was more of an inconvenience for guests.

The Hāwea Store and Kitchen also experienced a few outages in the past month which often lasted from 20 minutes to one hour and sometimes longer.

An Aurora energy spokesperson said thanks to the fault response team, power was largely restored within one and a-half hours on Tuesday night.

One of the two main power lines supplying electricity to the district was undergoing routine maintenance at the time, the spokesperson said.

Such maintenance on the network is done outside of peak demand times.

"There is sufficient capacity for one of the lines to manage the full load. However, last night the second line tripped, interrupting supply."

The spokesperson said investigations were under way to find the cause of the fault and Aurora Energy apologised for any inconvenience to customers.
