Three Cromwell kickboxers bought home seven medals from the North Island World Association of Kickboxing Organisations (WAKO) Championships held in Auckland last weekend.

Anika Takimoana, Dennis Beattie and Roma Despeysses all won medals in their first kickboxing championship event.

Anika collected two gold medals in continuous and point sparring, and a silver in kicklight sparring, which allows leg kicks.

Dennis won two bronze medals in continuous and kicklight sparring and Roma won two silver medals in kicklight and continuous sparring.

Coach Kman McEvoy said the trio had been training very hard for months in preparation for the event and deserved their achievements.

"I am so proud of all them for the spirit and respect they all displayed at the championships, which is a big part of martial arts and combat sports," he said.

Anika, who is only 17 years old is now in contention to be selected to represent New Zealand at the world championships, due to be held in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates in November.

Mr McEvoy, who was recently appointed national president for WAKO New Zealand, said that the South Island WAKO kickboxing championship would be held in Cromwell for the first time in May.

All martial arts and kickboxing clubs were invited to compete, he said.

The championships would have divisions for all ages from eight and up to over 50s in point fighting, continuous and kicklight sparring on mats, as well as full contact K1 kickboxing fights in the ring.
