As summer ended, autumn said hello with a scorching Dunner stunner. However, the heat will not be sticking around.

The temperature in Dunedin yesterday reached a warm 25°C, and with light wind it was great weather to hit the beach.

However, that will not continue into this week.

A MetService spokesman said a cold change would come sweeping through Otago, Dunedin getting the worst of it all.

"Pretty rapidly this kind of cold front will move over — [today] you’re expecting a high of maybe 21°C, then on Tuesday you’re looking at more [like] 17°C.

"That will carry through right till Saturday, when you can expect it to start slowly picking back up to the early 20s."

The forecaster's website shows a high of just 15C for the city on Wednesday.

In terms of the greater area, it was just climatological effects, the spokesman said.

"Middlemarch generally has a higher day-night temperature cycle, so it’ll be a bit warmer in the day. Dunedin is the main place where the effects of the cold change will be felt."

Clyde and Alexandra were the hottest areas in Otago yesterday, where the mercury reached 31°C.

Balclutha was a warm 26°C and Oamaru managed to reach a high of 21°C.

Queenstown had a high of 26.6°C and Wānaka recorded a high of 27°C.

Yesterday was the warmest day of the weekend and people were out in number on the region's beaches.
