A new weekly Dunedin fashion market promises to help keep clothing out of the landfill.

324 Central Market director Nikko Kim was sick of seeing clothing being over-produced then thrown out months later, so he got some friends together to do something about it.

Starting next Saturday, people can hire a rack at his weekly George St clothes market to sell their loved-but-barely-worn clothing.

Mr Kim said the main goal was to make selling pre-loved clothing as simple and as accessible as possible.

"I saw this stat recently where it said at the moment there is enough clothing in the world to clothe the next six generations. A lot of second-hand stores around Dunedin are also not taking donations any more. They’re full up."

Clothes needed to be in good condition, clean and free of breaks and tears.

They wanted to help create an alternative space for people to spend money in a more considerate way, Mr Kim said.

"On our soft launch, some sellers made $750, some made, like, $400 — I think this is something that is missing from Dunedin.

"This is all pre-loved clothing. People now have more accessibility and choice to find something unique at a much cheaper rate, and it’s a simple enough concept that anyone could do it.

"Accessibility for people is the main goal — anyone can come along and hopefully this keeps some clothing from landfills."

The market will run every Saturday at 324 George St from 9am to 4pm.

Prospective sellers get to keep 100% of the profits. They just need to bring along hangers and clothing.

Racks can be hired for $65, or two for $95.
