The Clyde railway station has two new leases - on life and with a new tenant.

Construction work to restore the building is nearly complete, and a lease agreement for a commercial tenant could be completed within the next week.

With the replacement of rotten weatherboards finished, preparation for repainting the station, the next phase of the restoration, is due to start this week.

Central Otago District Council property and facilities manager Tara Bates said the work, which started on October 20, was expected to be completed in the week before Christmas.

She could not name the commercial tenant set to move into the building until after a lease agreement was signed, due to commercial sensitivity.

It was likely the tenant would be able to move into the building in March next year. There had not been much interest in the lease opportunity, she said.

The work, which included the outside of the station being repainted in cream, with details picked in a dark red colour, looked good, she said. It was ''definitely'' up to expectations.

The cost of the restoration was just under the $90,000 available for the work.

The money had been obtained through fundraising by Promote Dunstan and the Clyde Railway Station Steering Committee, from grants by the Lottery Grants Board and the Central Lakes Trust, in addition to a donation from Promote Dunstan.

The colour scheme was agreed upon through consultation with the Rail Heritage Trust of New Zealand.

A working bee is being held at the station tomorrow

between 10am and noon to prepare the building for painting. Anyone willing to assist can register their interest with the council.
