A Dunedin family left without a vehicle after their car was stolen were shocked to see a teenager flaunting it to his friends on social media.

On Tuesday, police received multiple calls about cars being stolen from all over the city.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond said three Toyota Aquas, one Toyota Mark X and one Mazda Familia were identified as stolen by the four teenagers.

After police located and arrested the youths — aged between 14 and 16 — at the top of Stone St, Kaikorai Valley, they were charged with unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle.

The next day, however, one of the teenagers allegedly involved posted a picture of himself standing on the roof of one of the stolen vehicles with a popular hip-hop drill song called 2 A.M. by King Von playing in the background.

His next post was a screenshot of the Otago Daily Times report detailing his and his friends’ alleged theft spree.

The owner of a Toyota Aqua stolen on the night in question said he hoped they "burn it out" as he did not want to get back in it after "they have finished doing whatever the hell they have done in it".

"It’s going to be pretty hard to put up with — we actually filled the car’s tank up the day before, unfortunately. That’s sod’s law, isn’t it?

"There’s enough petrol to be driving that around for a couple of weeks."

He said he hoped the police got the teenagers the help they needed, for their safety and everyone else’s.

The family had two cars, but their other car broke down the day before the Aqua was stolen.

"Luckily, we’ve got a neighbour who’s lent us a car, but we’re probably a bit carless for a bit now."

Snr Sgt Bond said when police first spotted two of the teenagers on Tuesday, they were playing bumper cars and ramming each other while driving along Kaikorai Valley Rd.

Police located one of the vehicles dumped on the side of the road and called in the dog squad.

They located two teenagers at the top of Stone St, Kaikorai Valley. Another two were found nearby.

The four teenagers arrested in relation to the thefts would appear in Dunedin Youth Court today.
