Reaction to nuts severe

A teenage supermarket worker was rushed to hospital yesterday following a severe allergic reaction to nuts.

Two ambulances were sent to Mosgiel New World in Hartstonge Ave, about 10.45am.

A St John spokesman confirmed a teenage girl was taken to Dunedin Hospital in a serious condition, following a ''severe allergic reaction to nuts''.

A Foodstuffs New Zealand spokeswoman said the woman was a part-time employee, but would not confirm if she was working in the bakery department at the time of the incident.

''Out of respect for our employee's privacy, we are not going to comment further.''

She declined to answer several questions about the incident, but confirmed the company had a policy for workers who had a known nut allergy.

''The store followed the required health and safety protocols.''

The teenager was later discharged from hospital and was recovering at home, the spokeswoman said.
