Schools from around rural Southland competed in the Northern Southland Cup last Thursday, giving children a great chance to mingle and compete with each other.

The event was held at Mossburn Primary School, with participants competing in indoor cricket, kiorahi, table tennis and football.

Pupils from Waikaia, Balfour, Lumsden, Garston, Mossburn, Mararoa, and Te Anau had a great day, Mossburn School principal Tracey Doak said.

‘‘It was fantastic by all accounts. [There has been] a lot of positive feedback.

‘‘You can’t go wrong when the weather is great,’’ she said.

Mrs Doak said the day was a chance for pupils of age groups to get together and build relationships.

‘‘They were catching up with people, meeting new people and getting to play for their school. It was fantastic.

Everyone chipped in, with Active South, Cricket Southland, Football Southland and parents helping to officiate games, cook food and set up.

Mrs Doak said it was a big effort to get the day together.

‘‘It’s a mammoth effort organising it, so it’s hard to find time, so once a year it’s good. We have amazing parent and community support,’’ she said.

Mrs Doak said she was more than happy to have her school host the event, as its new sport facility is perfect for the occasion.

‘‘We host it because we have such great facilities, people were quite awed by them, which was cool for a small school.

‘‘We also have amazing parent and community support.’’

Teams from schools were separated into two pools of eight.

The winner on the day was Mighty Mauroa, with the Mossburn Stags hot on their heels.

A sportsmanship award was given to the Garston Aces.

Mrs Doak thanked everyone who helped to make the day possible.
