Pupils from Dipton School wave encouragement to Anthony Holland, from Winton, as he charges down the Ōreti River in his unlimited class boat during the first day of the Golden Homes New Zealand Jet Boat Marathon yesterday.
The race is due to move to the Waiau River today, before moving on to the Mataura River.
In total, 24 boats lined up in the race, including seven in the unlimited class.

Racing concludes on Saturday with another day of racing on the Ōreti River. After the first day of racing, Southland’s Roger Preston sits in first place. Otago’s Tom Kelly is in third. And Holland is in fourth position.
