Tennis South Canterbury was tickled pink last week after hosting a new tournament to raise funds for breast cancer.

On Friday, the first edition of Pink Ladies Doubles was held at the Trust Aoraki Tennis Centre and featured 10 teams of two going head-to-head for a good cause.

Tennis South Canterbury administrator Anna Telfer said the fundraiser tournament was a success.

"We decided to do a mini doubles event to raise funds for breast cancer, so it was ladies only we were targeting and we got them to all wear pink or dress up.

"The entry fees that they paid will be donated.

"The weather was great and there was a good mix of ages."

She said that everyone had fun and it seemed to be well received.

"The older ones actually won which was quite ironic but there were some good younger ones as well.

"We might go for it again next year, just for something different to show that we’re supporting other things as well as ourselves."

She said the idea for the event came from a similar event that had run pre-Covid.

"I thought I’ll revamp that up again and since it was Breast Cancer Awareness Month this month as well, I thought I’d just see what we could get.

"It was well received.

"Next year we will hopefully make it bigger and get a few more entries but it was good for a first time."

There was both a competitive and social section — the competitive side was won by the "Two Old Peas" team of Kay Kirke and Lorraine Pratten.

Tennis South Canterbury will next turn its attention to hosting the South Canterbury Primary School Tennis Champs, which begin on November 1.

The six-week-long corporate Big Bash tournament is also set to return on November 6 and anyone still wishing to enter can do via the Tennis South Canterbury website or by emailing Anna Telfer.
