As The World berthed at Port Chalmers yesterday morning for a two-night stay, no passengers peered out from their balconies to see their new port.

The World is not a cruise ship — instead it is advertised as the largest private residential yacht in the world, with 165 units on board.

Residents own their own their units and some live there permanently.

Two passengers in Dunedin yesterday, who declined to be named, said the ship was "very busy" — New Zealand was a popular destination.

They said they lived on the ship most of the year and got to know their fellow residents well.

"It’s a very nice way to see the world — you meet some great people," one said.

"A community of like-minded adventurers ... very curious, really bright," the other said.

The ship circumnavigates the globe, following an itinerary set by the residents.

Unit prices are not widely advertised but are speculated to go for between about $3 million to $25m.
