Bridge lights set to operate

Traffic lights at the 110-year-old Luggate Red Bridge will be switched on this coming Monday, October 21, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi announced in a statement yesterday.

The lights are being tested this week.

They control access at either end of the single-lane bridge over the Clutha River and will managed traffic flow, making it safer for motorists and helping extend the life of the historic bridge, which is regularly inspected, maintained and repaired.

"The traffic signals will help to protect the historic bridge from the impact of heavy, modern vehicles by slowing down their approach speed so they have less damaging impact upon the bridge as they travel across it," the statement said.

Cameras on the bridge give a direct feed back to NZTA’s Wellington Transport Operations Centre network controls team so they can monitor traffic flows and make adjustments if needed. — APL
