Nearly 100 secondary school surfers have gathered at St Clair Beach in Dunedin for the national scholastic championships.

The event started on Monday — waves were a stable 1m-1.5m — and will continue all week with eight age group divisions for males and females across both shortboard and longboard disciplines.

The scholastic championships have been held annually since 1989.

The latest test results for all beaches (except Tomahawk) have now come back with "satisfactory" water quality levels, so most restrictions have been lifted, the Dunedin City Council said yesterday.
