Large letters emblazoned across a John McGlashan College foyer read ''From those to whom much has been given, much will be expected''.

And those words will be put into action by six pupils soon.

Year 13 pupils Jack Ascroft and Vivian Griffiths are taking on the ''Alps to Ocean'' challenge in two days - a 300km mountain bike ride from Mt Cook to Oamaru.

Jack said they planned to complete the feat by cycling two 10-hour days - 160km on day one and 140km on day two.

''It's an endurance challenge - physical and mental - and it's about raising awareness and funds for KidsCan.''

Vivian said that neither pupil was a cyclist and their lower bodies took time to condition to long hours of cycling.

Year 12 pupils Henry Sullivan, Charles Darling, Wilson Mitchell and Joshua Preston are taking on a 270km cycling, trekking and kayaking challenge.

The pupils had planned to complete the challenge in three days from December 20.

They start and finish in Wanaka and take in Dart Hut, Cascade Saddle, Glenorchy, Arrowtown and Glendhu Bay.

Joshua said the pupils were ''excited and a wee bit nervous''. Wilson said the journey was raising money for the Child Cancer Foundation, with more than $2000 already collected.
