Three Otago ice-cream makers have made the finals of this year’s New Zealand Ice Cream & Gelato Awards.
Wānaka-based PURE New Zealand has won 10 medals (two gold, four silver and four bronze), and Queenstown’s Patagonia Chocolates has won nine medals (six gold medals, two silver and one bronze medal) and Mrs Ferg has won four medals (one gold, one silver and two bronze).
Judged by a panel of 20 judges led by chief judge Geoff Scott, there were 233 entries. From these, 169 medals were awarded.
In a statement, Scott says this year was marked by a significant increase in entries from boutique-scoop stores.
Flavours varied widely, from Patagonia Chocolates’ "mascarpone cheese & fruits of the forest", to Mrs Ferg’s "speculoos" to PURE New Zealand Ice Cream’s "boysenberry sorbet".
The gala awards are being held on August 29.
