The Otago Hockey Association has received a significant donation towards the installation of its second water-based hockey turf at Logan Park, Dunedin, from the Community Trust of Otago.

The trust distributed a total of $395,400 to 24 organisations throughout Otago last month, with the hockey association receiving $200,000.

The money will go towards the $850,000 required to replace the association's sand-based turf.

Association chief executive Chris Aubin described the 18-year-old turf as "shot".

He was "overjoyed" with the grant and for the continued support the trust had shown to hockey in the region.

"They recognise how important it is for the project to go through . . . without them, we couldn't do this."

With removal of the sand-turf set to begin early next month, it was hoped the new water-based turf would be ready in January.

Other large donations made by the trust included $40,000 to the Balclutha Presbyterian Church to help replace its hall; $28,000 to Surf Life Saving Otago to provide a beach education programme for Otago children; and $25,000 to the Otago Outdoor Education Trust to help upgrade its Bannockburn camp.

Events in Dunedin over the festive months were also given a boost - the Dunedin Santa Parade Trust was granted $15,000 and $5000 was donated to the Dunedin City Council to go towards the New Year's Eve celebrations in the Octagon.
