CD Reviews: The Magic Numbers

Four years on from Runaway, The Magic Numbers return with a fourth album that further distances them from the friendly indie pop that characterised their earliest releases.

Maturing into an altogether less chirpy outfit has brought with it a willingness to experiment, characterised by the double-shot of spacious and moody tracks that open the set.

From there, different tangents are explored, from harmony-filled anthem rock to strings-rich soul and a touch of disco, which makes for an impressively wide-ranging album if not a particularly well-focused one.
