Volunteers are the lifeblood of the Cancer Society’s work in South Canterbury and beyond. Hundreds of dedicated individuals generously give their time to support those in our community affected by cancer.

From fundraising events to driving clients to appointments, facilitating support groups, and providing comforting baked goods, our Cancer Society volunteers take on diverse roles. But one thing unites them all: their unwavering commitment to reducing the impact of cancer in our community.

Last week, about 25 client drivers — who play a crucial role in getting clients to and from treatment — gathered for a first aid training session at the South Canterbury Centre.

Led by another remarkable volunteer, Teresa from Hato Hone St John, the group discussed how to handle situations if a client became unwell during a trip. The session concluded with a thank-you afternoon tea for our regular volunteers.

Community manager Tracey Barratt said the society often reminded its volunteers to never underestimate the impact they had on clients and the wider community.

"Through their dedication and selflessness, our volunteers ensure that no-one faces cancer alone, demonstrating the power of community spirit in making a difference and for that we are truly grateful."

On Daffodil Day, our largest fundraiser, in late August, a vibrant volunteer army dressed in yellow will hit the streets, selling fresh daffodils and participating in the street collection day on Friday, August 31.
