Palmerston St John staff and volunteers celebrated its first birthday with an open day on Sunday at the Palmerston St John station.
Dunedin Area committee chairman for the South Island region, Joyce Whyman, said St John was in the process of buying the station building, which it had rented for the first year.
Waitaki territory manager Ken Barton said ambulance callouts at the station had averaged more than one a day, higher than expected.
Mr Barton said St John Palmerston station was training two new volunteers, and has vacancies for another five.
