Gumboot run under way

A Dunedin high school is in the middle of its 24-hour run to fundraise for mental health charity Gumboot Friday.

Senior pupils at King’s High School were off the mark at 3pm yesterday as they began their 24-hour slog running a circuit around their school.

Rector Nick McIvor said the event had been growing each day through the past week and it had garnered interest from many of the school’s pupils.

"Not only has it captured their thoughts and imagination but it has been really inclusive of everyone.

"It’s really pleasing to see those who aren’t into playing sport that much take part as well."

He said a lot of the pupils knew someone in their circle who had struggled with mental health and wanted to contribute.

Pupils were receiving money based on the number of laps they completed and a number of businesses had offered support by contributing food for the event, Mr McIvor said.

The school had a mufti day and a gumboot throwing competition yesterday that collected a hefty sum as well.

Year 13 pupil Magnus Heaphy said he was taking part in the run because he cared about mental health and wanted everyone to have a healthy state of mind.

He said it was great to see all of his peers work together with a great team chemistry.
