Dunedin city councillor Mandy Mayhem said Ms Tucker had made a long-standing commitment to the community with her involvement in several community groups including Keep Dunedin Beautiful.
"Jan was very active in annual events, cleanups and beautification projects, including the hanging baskets along the city main street."
Her contribution to Keep Dunedin Beautiful was remembered with the Jan Tucker special award for outstanding volunteering, recently granted to local plogger Antonia Wood, of St Leonards.
Ms Tucker’s diverse contributions extended beyond community service.
For 35 years she was a physical education teacher and sports coach at King Edward Technical School, which later became Logan Park High School.
She also spent time as vice-president of Bowls New Zealand and was a member of local groups including the Rotary and Lions.
West Harbour Community Board chairwoman Ange McErlane said Ms Tucker served as chairwoman and member of the West Harbour Community Board as well as the previous Port Chalmers Community Board.
She played an instrumental role in the development of the shared path cycle and walkway, and although she avoided recognition for her efforts, the local community now had a unique piece of infrastructure that would be enjoyed by thousands of walkers and cyclists.
"Jan would have been very proud and humbled to see this project come to completion."
