Otago rider Reta Trotman will look to make an impact on the Benchmark series, which starts in North Canterbury tomorrow, before she heads back to Europe.

Trotman, who impressed in the series last year, is a member of the Otago-based Cycle World Fairweathers team which will ride in the series.

The first race tomorrow is around Oxford in North Canterbury and is on a 159km hilly course which will be testing for riders with the temperature expected to be hot.

Trotman, who rides for German pro team MaxxSOLAR, is the leading female contender in the series.

She was third in last week's Oceania time trial championships and won bronze medals in last month's elite national championships in the road race and time trial.

She will team up with other Otago riders Emma Sutherland and Georgia Catterick. Trotman will head to Germany for the northern hemisphere summer in April.

More than 100 riders will line up in the opening race of the series tomorrow with the likes of Michael Vink, Sam Horgan and George Bennett sure to be in the running.

Horgan, the series defending champion, looms as one of the favourites.

Alexandra rider James Williamson will line up in the elite field alongside Chris Nicholson, of Nelson.

A double Olympian in cycling and speed skating, Nicholson is back in the saddle only five months after a potentially fatal cardiac arrest.

A new 50-plus grade has been established, bringing to three the number of masters grades in the series.
