Lost family led to safety

A young family did everything right when they got lost in bush on Flagstaff yesterday.

When walking on the Jim Freeman track about 3pm the Dunedin family became disoriented in the dense bush, Constable Don Peat said.

Rather than get themselves into more strife, they decided to contact the police for help.

Const Peat said he was familiar with the territory and he and Const Phil Beckwith, another search and rescue member, found the family 20m off the main track, within an hour.

While they were a little scared, the family walked out to safety at 5pm.

"It's a timely reminder for people to stay put if they get lost in the bush," Const Peat said.
