The memorial has sat beside State Highway 1 near the Old Post Office Gallery since 1927 but the Waikouaiti Coast Community Board chairman, Gerard Collings, said the RSA was seeking the board's support to shift the monument.
When the memorial was erected, the site was surrounded by shops and the post office and the Waikouaiti railway station was close by. The town centre and the postal services have since shifted up the hill to the south of the war memorial, Mr Collings said.
The board has decided to seek a report from Dunedin City Council staff on the merits of the request.
Mr Collings said the board would consult the community over any possible shift.
