A Dunedin golf course clubhouse has had a $1 million rebuild after a blaze destroyed the original two years ago.

Belleknowes Golf Club vice-president and recovery team leader Gordon Wilson said the fire on June 29, 2021, was a huge shock but he was looking forward to a new chapter for the club as it approached the end of its centenary year.

"It was particularly sad to lose the club — particularly the memorabilia in the club.

"But it is a new beginning and we’re going with a brand new clubhouse into our next century so that is something."

On Sunday, people who helped build and finance the new clubhouse were invited to its formal opening officiated by two of the club’s life members, Basil Kensington and Dick Perry.

Mr Wilson said the new clubhouse looked outstanding as it had been elevated and had very good views out to St Clair and Otago Harbour.

He said aside from the space being used by members, the clubhouse could be hired out for functions for up to 70 people.

"We see this as a hub for the local community and we do appreciate the community support we’ve had over the years."

Mr Wilson said the clubhouse cost just over $1m to rebuild with support from Otago Community Trust, Aotearoa Gaming Trust and Otago Masonic Charitable Trust.

The club would resurrect the honours board this week.
