Southern police officers will be among the first in the country to receive new Tasers.
Deputy Commissioner Tania Kura said new Tasers would be introduced to all districts over the next three years, beginning in the Southern and Canterbury districts in early 2024.
"With our current Taser fleet nearing its end of life and components of the model we use no longer being manufactured, we need to ensure our staff have the best tools available to them to keep themselves, and our communities, safe," she said.
While the current Tasers had built-in cameras, the new model did not.
"New Taser devices are not manufactured with a built-in camera. Most other jurisdictions rely on body-worn cameras to record Taser use," Dep Comm Kura said.
The issue of police wearing body cameras is being considered as a separate issue.
