Mr Griffiths, who was named Dunedin's ''Citizen of the Year'' in 1999, published numerous historical books and pamphlets throughout his career.
He worked in newspapers for 37 years from 1954, starting with the Southland Daily News, and later for the ODT from 1962 until his retirement in 1991, having also done two stints with the Evening Star.
During his time with the ODT, Mr Griffiths was a leader writer, book editor and also penned Prester John's ''Talk of the Times'' column from 1964 until 1988.
He founded Otago Heritage Books, with Judith Cox, in 1978; was a life member of several organisations including the Otago Early Settlers Association, was awarded a QSO in 1999 for services to the community and was also awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Otago in 1999.
