Proposed major hotel development put on market

A major hotel development proposed for the Wānaka CBD was put up for sale this week.

Wānaka Central, as the development is known, is designed for a 5642sqm, six-lot, freehold site with a 75m frontage in Ardmore St.

Bayleys Real Estate agent Ryan Johnson told the Otago Daily Times this week that plans consented in July included a four-storey hotel with more than 120 luxury four-star-plus rooms, 58 upmarket residential units and a rooftop bar and terrace.

"The property for sale represents one of the few large-scale development opportunities in downtown Wānaka and the Southern Lakes."

The site was previously occupied by a relocatable fish and chip business and an old house and former art gallery that closed many years ago.

One of Wānaka Central JV Ltd’s directors is Tony Gapes, who was involved in Queenstown’s Five Mile development.

Mr Gapes said the Wānaka Central development company, ‘‘of which I am only one part’’, had decided to sell due to a change in circumstances.

There was no connection between the sale and liquidation proceedings involving others of his property entities.

Potential buyers have until October 12 to register their interest.
