Samantha Hall, of Balclutha, washes 3-year-old Angus bull Brookfield at the Mosgiel showgrounds yesterday, in preparation for today's Otago Taieri A&P Society show.
Despite being dwarfed by the bull, Miss Hall said she was not afraid.
''I've raised him since he was a calf. He's a gentle giant.''
The bull, and other cattle entered, belong to her uncle, Rob Hall, of Waikaka.
Society president Wayne Smaill said fine weather was forecast for today's show and he expected a large crowd. The main parade starts at 1.30pm. Mr Smaill said the dairy, sheep and beef sections were well supported, as were equestrian and canine events. Pony club riders started competing at the showgrounds yesterday morning, and horse-riding competitions will continue today and tomorrow.
The show will also feature a paddock-to-plate competition to determine the Taieri's best lamb, a live performance by X Factor NZ contestant Tom Batchelor, book readings and signings by Wanaka children's author Chris Baldwin with her muse, pet dog Chief, competitions featuring champion axemen, cooking demonstrations, home industry displays, canine obedience demonstrations and Scottish games. There will also be free face-painting for children.
