A world-first to reduce litter has been approved by the Otago Peninsula Community Board.
"No-one’s ever done it before," chairman Paul Pope said of his idea to set up "litter libraries".
Based on the Lilliput Library concept, instead of books, there would be rubber gloves and buckets for people to use to collect trash, he said.
To make it easier to empty the buckets, the libraries would be placed near the three-bin locations by peninsula schools.
Asked if there was any likelihood of the first litter library being in place in time for Keep Dunedin Beautiful’s Clean-up Week from September 16-23, Mr Pope said, "not a show".
A trial for the summer season, probably in Portobello, was agreed.
Mr Pope estimated each library would cost between $200 and $600, depending how much assistance could be obtained, for example, by involving Blokes Sheds and asking commercial organisations for suitable buckets.
