The four major skifields in the Queenstown Lakes area are all looking to push into the next school holidays, making up for a very slow start to the season.
Coronet Peak, in a media release, announced keen skiers now had until October 1 to enjoy the mountain before they closed for the season.
The season will be extended out into the first week of the school holidays, giving a good excuse to get the whole family out for one last go on the snow.
Usually, the skifield would close in the middle of next month but due to the slow start to the snow season, Coronet Peak ski area manager Nigel Kerr said it was only fair to make up for it at the end.
"Spring is almost here and we feel like we’re just getting going.
"August has seen a reversal of fortune, with sustained snowmaking mixed in with the odd snowfall changing the mountain dramatically for the better," Mr Kerr said.
In the release, they teased the prospect of the pond skim being up and operating on Coronet Peak’s final day of the season.
Also closing on October 1 will be the Treble Cone skifield.
However, there will still be an opportunity to have some fun in the snow — The Remarkables will close later on October 8 and the Cardrona skifield is scheduled to close on October 15.
Snow bases have increased this month as more natural snow has fallen.
The fields were looking bare in July due to a lack of snow, but have bounced back in some form.
