Company staff’s blonde mullets support mental health charity

Staff at a Dunedin company are joining the blonde mullet revolution for a good cause, even if it might cost one of them their marriage.

The six workers from Dimond Roofing were yesterday sporting new haircuts to raise money for the Gumboot Friday charity.

Donations made to the charity, which is focused on mental health and suicide prevention, went towards free counselling for young New Zealanders.

Blonde mullet revolutionary Kevin McClintock described the cause as "incredibly significant" to him and his team.

"We’ve had staff members that have been affected by suicide within their family, so we’re just doing our bit to help.

"We’re happy to go outside of our comfort zone, grow a mullet and dye it blonde.

"If it helps make money for a really worthy charity and helps some young people then we’d do it all over again."

He joked the new haircuts could jeopardise the marriage of one staff member.

"One of us hasn’t actually told their wife that they’re doing this today, so potentially they may be moving into someone else’s house ...

"Do you have a section in the paper for recently divorced?"

The fundraiser was started by the company Fletcher Steel, which offered $100 donations on behalf of each staff member who joined the cause.

Mr McClintock was immensely proud of the 40 staff from various Fletcher Steel divisions who managed to raise at least $4000 for the charity.

"It’s a small sacrifice to make for those who have to sacrifice so much.

"For us, our children are our future and to see children struggling with simple things is quite hard for all of us."

Envy Hair Studio gave the staff their fresh new dos free of charge to support the cause.

"They’ve done an amazing job for us and we’re really pleased they helped us out with this ... they’ve said they’d be donating to the charity as well."
