The Southern Region competition is heating up with semifinals just around the corner.

Draws committee members must be rubbing their hands together as all top five teams get a crack at one another in what will be four explosive weeks of rugby.

Lawrence and Clinton get the ball rolling tonight in Lawrence.

These two sides are not in semifinal contention any longer but there is still plenty to play for. The ninth-placed team will be eliminated before finals weekend, so neither side will want to lock away the dreaded wooden spoon.

Clinton is in the box seat, thanks to a strong first round of the season, but Lawrence is very difficult to beat under lights, as Toko found out not so long ago.

A top-of-the-table battle takes place at Outram tomorrow as first-placed West Taieri hosts second-placed Heriot.

Both sides had strong wins last weekend and are favourites to lock in home semifinals.

However, one team will more than likely lose this game and could slip as far as fourth, thanks to the logjam below them.

Toko hosts Crescent at Milton with three trophies on the line.

The home side won the McIntosh Cup and Speight’s Jug in Clydevale last weekend and these two trophies, coupled with the Eddie Scott Memorial, make for an intriguing encounter.

Toko has moved into third place and will be favourite in this match.

Crescent scored more than 40 points against the competition leader last weekend but they conceded more than 60.

Clutha Valley will be looking to get back on the horse with a win over Owaka at Clydevale.

Valley dropped from second to fifth last weekend and will be well aware of what another loss this weekend will do to its title chances.
