Rain, gales, sun, snow—South to get it all

The hills around Otago and Southland could be in for a dusting of snow on Monday.

A MetService spokesman said a low pressure system was forecast to move out of the Tasman Sea tomorrow and across the South Island on Saturday, bringing heavy rain to much of the upper South Island.

Then, on Sunday, a cold front was expected to move northwards across the South Island, bringing showers and strong-to-gale-force southwest winds.

Temperatures could rise as high as 20degC on Sunday, but drop as low as 3degC overnight into Monday morning in the main centres, and lower in elevated areas.

"This may bring a dusting of snow to the ranges of Southland and Otago.

"There is moderate confidence of southwest gales becoming severe Sunday and early Monday about exposed coasts from southern Fiordland to Dunedin on Monday," he said.
