The annual awards, organised by the Designers Institute of New Zealand and held in Auckland last night, recognised the ''strongest design work produced in New Zealand''.
The Rogue paintball gun, designed by Mosgiel-based Alex Hodge, of Hodge Ltd, picked up a ''gold pin'' award, which is a step down from the supreme ''purple pin'' award.
The judges applauded the design for its ''striking aesthetic resolution'' and Mr Hodge's ''careful attention'' to how the product would be used.
Dunedin designs which picked up silver pin awards were the Thin Air wind turbine, designed by William Early, of Powerhouse Wind, and the 90cm freestanding cooker range and 60cm built-in oven range, both designed by Fisher & Paykel Appliances.
Dunedin bronze pin awards went to The Backpod, a product designed by Andrew Wallace to relieve upper back pain, and a sensor designed to monitor kayakers' performance by Vaaka Ltd.
Designer's Institute of New Zealand chief executive Cathy Veninga, said it was heartening to see New Zealand designers were ''pushing boundaries of innovation''.
''The ideas and their execution are truly world class, to bring the best results for businesses,'' Ms Veninga said.
The supreme winners included Auckland University of Technology's new Sir Paul Reeves building and an exercise machine designed for Les Mills.
