Beer fest a success

Once again, West Otago's version of Oktoberfest, complete with ''beer wenches'' and an oompah band was a success, organiser and Tapanui Rugby Club chairman Malcolm Hancox said.

After a year off last year, the Tapanui Beer Fest, a community fundraiser, was back, and took place at the West Otago Showgrounds on Saturday.

Hofbrau, a German beer, was imported from the home of Oktoberfest, Munich, and people were encouraged to don their lederhosen or other fancy dress.

About 250 people from the greater West Otago area attended the event, including two German tourists who had learned of the beer fest from a local paper.

Although he was not sure how much money was raised, Mr Hancox estimated it would be about ''a few thousand''.

This year, the funds would go to the Tapanui Rugby club for clubroom and ground maintenance.

In 2011, the money raised was distributed to various charities by the Moa Flat Young Farmers Club.

The year before, the money went to the West Otago Health Trust for a rest-home.
