Despite KiwiRail abandoning much of its business in Dunedin, the company will celebrate the 150th anniversary of New Zealand rail in the city this month as part of a nationwide celebration.
A travelling exhibition showcasing rail in New Zealand will visit 12 locations throughout the country as part of the month-long event.
Keeping NZ on the Move: The Exhibition Express will be at the Dunedin Railway Station on October 19 and at the Oamaru Railway Station on October 21.
It will feature four individually themed containers hauled by a locomotive, to represent the journey of rail in New Zealand from 1863 to 2013.
Also showcased would be the ''vital role KiwiRail plays in moving New Zealand's economy'', the state-owned enterprise said.
In the past couple of years, KiwiRail has shut down operations at South Dunedin's Hillside Engineering Workshops, which was once a central part of rail manufacture. The redundancy of more than 100 workers still angered Dunedin residents.
KiwiRail chief executive Jim Quinn said the exhibition was about acknowledging and celebrating the ''incredible'' history of rail in New Zealand and how far it had come.
