Neighbouring streets around the intersection of State Highway 6 and SH6A will be used as the overnight detour next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 10pm to 6am, while New Zealand Upgrade Programme utility investigations are done.
Access for emergency service vehicles will remain, but McBride St and Gray St residents have been asked not to park on their streets to enable detoured traffic to travel through the area easily.
The investigations, requiring excavation of several narrow trenches to confirm the location of underground utilities and services, will help inform the design of intersection improvements and reduce the likelihood of delays during construction.
Other work is also being carried out at the same time, including installing new cabling, trenching and sealing around the intersection.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency regional relationships director James Caygill acknowledged night works were disruptive, but said it was unavoidable.
"Due to the high traffic volumes through Frankton — up to 25,000 vehicles per day — and restrictions on the state highway, it’s not possible to close the road during the day, so these essential works need to be completed at night.
"A full closure for three nights means works can be completed more quickly, rather than multiple partial closures over an extended period."
