But Otago teams had at a top week.
Dunedin club side the Mid-City Magic made to through to the semifinal where it was beaten 18-16 by the Rams. They edged the Saints 21-18 in the playoff for third, which was an outstanding result.
To be fair the Magic had a talented roster of Josh Aitcheson, Richie Rodger, Pafe Momoisea and Benji Freeman.
The Otago Nuggets were in blistering form early but got knocked out of contention in the round of 16 by the Giants.
They ended up having to settle for ninth. Had they made it into the quarterfinals, they would have a good chance of going even deeper.
Nikau McCullough was in fine touch during the tournament.
The Otago Gold Rush and the Southern Hoiho both made it through to the quarterfinal stage of the competition.
The Hoiho was edged 21-18 by the eventual champion, while the Gold Rush lost 16-11 to the Whai.
The Hoiho finished sixth and the Gold Rush took eighth pace.
The 3×3 Cup started on Wednesday and ran through to Saturday.
It was contested by 32 teams (16 men’s and 16 women’s) from throughout New Zealand.
