Trampers have been warned today to make their way out of a mountain track in the Mt Aspiring National Park, after a High Alert flood warning was issued.
The Department of Conservation (Doc) issued the code Amber warning for the Young Valley area (part of the Gillespie Pass Track in the Mt Aspiring National Park) in the wake of a MetService Severe Weather Warning that forecast heavy rain.
Trampers are being advised that if they intend to use this area during this period, not to camp in the valley floor and move through the Young Valley as quickly as possible.
Mt Aspiring National Park visitor centre supervisor Sonya Sawyers said 'High Alert' warning signs would be installed in nearby visitor centres and at relevant track entrances, but warned that the alert level could be raised to Code Red on Saturday.
"This office will review the situation on Saturday, July 6, at 9.30am and depending on the level of rain received and forecast at that time, a Code Red status may be activated to close access to the area as per the Young Valley Management Response Plan, or this alert will be removed. ''
