An unknown white powder, found in the possession of a Dunedin man at the University of Otago, is being tested by police.
Officers were called to the university's Dunedin campus about 5pm on Monday because the man was allegedly involved in an argument with another male.
Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said the 24-year-old man, who was not a university student, was initially apprehended for disorderly behaviour.
Officers found cannabis, sachets of white powder and a sum of money in $20 bills in the man's possession, Snr Sgt Aitken said.
The man was arrested and charged with possessing cannabis for supply, for which he was due to appear in the Dunedin District Court.
Snr Sgt Aitken said the white powder was being tested. Police inquiries into the incident were continuing.
''It [the white powder] could be BZP, it could be meth. It could be a whole lot of things,'' he said.
The university provided a brief response to questions about the incident, and whether there were concerns about drug dealing on campus.
''The alleged incident did not involve students. The matter is before the court, so we cannot discuss it,'' a spokeswoman said.
The Otago University Students' Association declined to comment on the incident yesterday, saying it was a matter for police and the university.
