Five charged in ram-raids; area widens

Five men have now been charged in relation to Invercargill ram-raids — two making first appearances in the Invercargill District Court yesterday.

Last month, Found My Way in Windsor and NZ Safety Blackwoods in the Bill Richardson industrial area in Invercargill were ram-raided.

The police executed a search warrant at an Invercargill address in relation to the ram-raids and the aggravated robbery of the Centre St Dairy in Invercargill.

However, charges laid against those believed to be involved show the crime spree went wider; charges relating to the theft of Mazda and Subaru vehicles, and the burglary of True Grit, were included.

Zacharey Soper (28) along with a 29-year-old and 18-year-old man — who were both granted interim name suppression — have previously appeared.

Yesterday, two 18-year-old men made an appearance in the Invercargill District Court before Judge Brian Callaghan — they were both granted interim name suppression.

One was charged with theft in Invercargill on August 8, dishonestly getting into a Mazda Demio and jointly charged with the burglary of Found My Way and True Grit, all on August 15 — he was remanded on bail without plea to appear on September 20.

The other was jointly charged with burglaries at a Herbert St residence, True Grit, NZ Safety Blackwoods and Found My Way; stealing four Mazda Demios, attempting to steal a Mazda station wagon and aggravated assault with a tomahawk with intent to rob — all allegedly happened between August 14 and 22.

He was remanded on bail without plea to appear on September 20.
