Gas line repaired after being struck by digger

A gas line struck by a contractor working on the George St upgrade in central Dunedin yesterday morning is back in service.

The line was hit in Great King St, between St Andrew St and Hanover St, about 11.20am, a Dunedin City Council spokesman said. Gas was restored to affected properties about 2pm and no-one was injured in the incident.

Emergency services responded promptly and cordoned off the area, the council spokesman said. The gas was turned off to allow the line to be repaired.

"We will follow up with our contractor to understand what happened and ensure they are taking all necessary precautions to minimise risks," the council spokesman said.

Four fire appliances attended the incident, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman said, and police also attended.
