Mossburn School senior pupils got crafty after realising their homes in their small community did not have letterboxes.

Principal Cheryl White said as a part of a maths project, pupils in room kikorangi investigated the reasons behind it and measured and created their own.

"The pupils studied a maths unit last term which focused on letterboxes and we took it a little further and investigated, why our small community doesn’t have a mail man? and, why does all our mail go to the local shop where there is PO boxes?"

NZ post representatives, service delivery manager Jason Enright and service delivery co-ordinator Wendy Jefferies visited the pupils to answer their questions and to judge their letterboxes.

Letterboxes had to be able to fit standard letters, A5 letters and A3 envelopes, as well as small parcels.

Mr Enright said they were delighted to be invited to Mossburn School to talk about rural delivery.

"The students were very entertaining and put a lot of effort into their mailbox designs. They learnt how having the correct mailbox specifications are important for the quick and safe delivery of mail and parcels throughout rural New Zealand."
