Old computer or cellphone clogging up your space? Afraid of the environmental headache of dumping it at the landfill? Then Saturday is the day for you.
October 4 is national eDay, a day when types of electronic waste can be diverted from landfill to be recycled or reused.
Organised by the Computer Access New Zealand Trust (CANZ), eDay is designed to raise awareness of the hazardous nature of electronic waste as well as offer an easy and environmentally friendly way for households to dispose of old computers and mobile phones.
Drive-through collection sites have been set up in 31 centres nationally. Dunedin's site is at the NZWH wool store in Orari St.
The collection site will be open from 9am to 3pm.
The 120 volunteers there will collect items such as computer hardware, monitors, scanners, keyboards, computer mice, speakers, printers, game consoles, toner and ink jet cartridges and mobile phones.
Equipment such as televisions and stereos will not be accepted.
With 415 tonnes of e-waste collected last year, organisers hope for 1000 tonnes this year.
Local organiser Roslyn Saunders said interest in the day had been high and the council had been fielding hundreds of calls about the day over the past few weeks.
Because it is the first time Dunedin will have a collection site for eDay, it is hoped 60 tonnes of waste will be collected.
