Members of the North East Valley community seeking a fresh set of wheels had the chance to grab a free bike this weekend, but there were no guarantees the brakes would work.

The Bike Workshop at the Valley Community Workspace in Dunedin was giving away free bikes to all who asked on Saturday as a way to clear out the workshop.

Co-ordinator Peter McDonald said many people had donated bicycles over the years.

There were so many bikes that it had become a burden.

With the price of living rising many people might be in need of a bicycle and there was no point having about 80 sitting around the shop, he said.

It was better to have the bikes out there being ridden and it gave the workshop a bit of a reset.

It was the first time the workshop had done a bike giveaway and he hoped it would not be necessary for quite a while.

Most of the bikes would need a bit of work, but they were all still in reasonable condition.

Some of the bikes were unique models which required some extra special care, but anyone who was willing to take on the challenge was free to take one home.

Josh Pendreigh was one of many to pick up a bike.

He had not had a bicycle since he was a child and had been considering getting one, but it would not have been for a long time, he said.

The front brake did not work fully and the reflectors were a bit loose, but he was confident he could get it back in shape in a weekend.
